Custom Key Signature Panel

Choose Tools in the menu bar.
Choose Custom Key Signatures... from the Tools menu.

The Custom Key Signature panel displays controls that allow you to design, save and load custom key signatures. Custom key signatures are sometimes found in non-Western music compositions and in some contemporary scores. Custom key signatures can combine all accidental types (including quarter sharps and flats) in any combination and in any order.

All custom key signatures are created against a treble clef but will be transposed up or down on the staff when used with other clefs. For example, the custom clef created above will appear as follows when used with other clefs:

Creating a Custom Key Signature.

Select the first of the radio buttons located below the custom key signature display
Select the accidental type for the first accidental to appear in the key signature from the palette of accidentals.
Move the pitch slider (located to the right of the key signature display) up and down to move the desired pitch.
When you have the correct accidental at the correct location, click on the Set This Acc button. Once set, the accidental changes colour from red to black.
Repeat the above procedure for each accidental in the key signature (moving each time to the next radio button below the key signature display.

Once the complete key signature has been created (and all accidentals in the display are black), click either the Set In Score 1 or Set in Score 2 button to store the key signature as either the first or second custom key signature in the current score. (Each score can have 2 different custom key signatures.)

If you want to clear the current custom key signature, click on the C button.

If you want to save the key signature so you can use it later in another score, click on the Save Key Sig button.

If you want to load a key signature that you previously saved, click on the Load Key Sig button.

Once a custom key signature has been created and added to the score, it will appear in one of the two final slots in the Key Signature pane. These two slots are reserved for any custom key signatures registered in the current score. Custom key signatures can be freely added throughout the score and you can switch between standard key signatures and custom key signatures in the same score. In the example below, the custom key signature created above has been added to a score and will be entered after a passage in G major -- naturals are included in the key signature change.

When the Change Key Signature button is clicked, the new key signature will be inserted into the score.

- While sharps, flats, naturals, double sharps and flats included in custom key signatures will all sound correctly during note entry, the quarter sharps and flats will be adusted to the closest semitone. However, quarter sharps and flats will sound at the correct pitch during score playback.
